The Best Emo – Pop Punk Playlist Ever?

A few weeks ago, Snow Coats came to The Record Club with what might just be the best emo / indie rock / Americana playlist we’ve had, sharing it with us over two wonderful sessions.

Now their friends Bony Macaroni have joined The Record Club too, this time with a killer emo / pop-punk playlist.

These Dutch bands are ridiculously well educated when it comes to American indie rock. And you can hear it in the superb albums they’ve released recently.

Is Bony Macaroni the European Blink-182? Same energy, but with deeper lyrics and a softer sound.

Back to their playlist. Just like Snow Coats’, it is dominated by American bands, and even the few that aren’t American are heavily influenced by the US indie-rock scene, Basement being a perfect example.

I was actually the one who added Blink-182 to the Bony Macaroni playlist. But it all made sense eventually: Stefan, the singer, admitted that he had been a huge fan. And then they put The Story So Far on their playlist! I could have added New Found Glory and we would have had the perfect pop-punk trio.

But Bony Macaroni’s good taste goes much further than pop punk. There’s emo and indie rock everywhere, from The Hotelier to Macseal, from Microwave to Oso Oso.

And of course there’s Weezer, Stefan’s favourite band and the Pinkerton Album his favourite album ever, as well as Fountains of Wayne, a major influence on Bony Macaroni and, needless to say, a major band for us too.

There are some great surprises as well: a fantastic track from 1980s punk legends Dead Kennedys, and even a song in Dutch from their friends, and one of their favourite bands, All Dogs Go To Heaven.

And, naturally, Snow Coats.

Which made me point out that Snow Coats provided the only female voice of the evening. Their answer? They’ll come back soon with an all-female playlist.

We’re holding them to it.
