Never seen such an homage as for the death of The Stone Roses’ bassist, Mani: my Instagram has been absolutely flooded for days. It pushed me to pick up this LP from The Stone Roses today at Sounds Record Store in Delft.
This album, a compilation of their earliest EPs (pre-debut) plus a few that came after, is in my opinion their strongest. It’s The Stone Roses in their purest form: unfiltered “baggy” sound, drums pushed forward, guitars thick and rough, the whole thing feeling almost live in its rawness.
And let’s be honest: from “Psychocandy” by The Jesus & Mary Chain and The Smiths to the early-90s wave of The Charlatans, Ride, and the rest not much truly new happened in indie pop… except The Stone Roses. Their sound was, and still is, utterly unique. A rising star band that burned out so fast it became a legend.
