I haven’t been buying many new albums these past few years, but the habit is slowly coming back.
And this new record from They Are Gutting a Body of Water (what a band name!) was an instant purchase. It’s pure shoegaze, slightly hardcore at times, but without lazily copying the My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive sound. Having seen them live at Outbreak Festival in London recently, I can confirm: the strange electro intros between songs, the unapologetic wall of sound are all signs of a real shoegaze revival among the younger generation. They’re shifting the rules a bit, but with genuine homage, in the spirit of what DIIV has been doing.
Happy to see shoegaze moving forward…
